what are the rules about buttons on baby knits?

Someone reading knows and can enlighten me, right? Because while I think these are darn cute, I'd like to avoid the whole choking-hazard thing. (They'll go on a sweater sized for a 1 year old, although it hasn't been knit yet, so I guess I could make it smaller if necessary.)

I generally just go a little overboard on attaching them. I think buttons are essential, so I refuse to skip out on them, but I usually sew them on very rigorously to make sure they aren't coming off to easily. Never had any complaints. I think it helps that your buttons are nice and bright and therefore very noticeable.

Thanks for the advice! I'm delighted that I don't have to give these up... and will make sure they're firmly attached before gifting!
